Master List of all Free Dungeons and Dragons Adventures and Modules to Cope with Quarantine [Updated 06/01]

All FREE Dungeons and Dragons adventures and modules for Roll 20 DnDBeyond online and table play

In the economy of uncertainty, FREE is definitely a welcome word. Add FREE and Dungeons and Dragons to the mix, and you will hopefully delight adventurers and D&D hopefuls around the world from DMsGuild to Roll 20 and beyond! Here’s a list of all the amazing, free adventure and game-play specific content that Wizards of the Coast (WotC) has released and is releasing to help dungeon-delvers defeat isolation doldrums.

These are often time-limited, so get ‘em quick when they go up!

Since April 6, WoTC has been releasing free DnD-related content but I’m specifically focused on the adventure modules and game resources – they have also released a slew of colouring pages and other entertaining non-gameplay activities as well, so feel free to check here for the full archive.

I’ll try to keep the list and product summaries of this free Dungeons and Dragons content from WotC updated as we continue to fight the COVID-19 BBEG:

Campaign Resources

Encounters in Sharn was a DMs Guild Adept collaboration set to supplement the long-awaited release of Eberron: Rising from the Last War.

It features a host of episodic, ready-made adventures that are set in and easily adapted to compliment adventures set in the new D&D 5e campaign port for Eberron and can also be strung together as an adventure-based campaign series.

Penned as a companion for Xanathar’s Guide to Everything, Rats of Waterdeep comes from a collaboration between official D&D designers and the DMsGuild Adept team. With the backdrop of an urban mystery, this also lends well as a supplement to any of the Waterdeep official campaigns, thick with murder, a hidden rat and the dangerous intrigue between.

Virtual Tabletop Addons and Modules(VTT)

DMsGuild and Adventurer’s League Published Adventures:

Bad Fruul and his minions have been threatening to overtake the town of Parnast for some time, and intelligence provided by SEER confirms that an attack is imminent. Despite this, the town is at risk from within as internal politics threaten to tear it apart. It is up to the adventurers to resolve the infighting in Parnast and prepare the town for the hill giant’s onslaught.

SEER has learned of an attempt to intimidate Gralm, an ettin, and his followers into joining Bad Fruul’s army. HSING comes forth to communicate that she wants you to see if you can find some way to either insure Gralm remains neutral, or to encourage the creature to challenge Bad Fruul to single combat in the hopes that he might wrest control of the hill giant’s forces and turn them back from Parnast.

Tangent to the Storm King’s Thunder campaign adventure, Chelimber’s Descent revolves around an ancient sunken wizard’s tower as a patron tasks the players with approaching the impossible depths of the ruined structure in the Marsh of Chelimber to collect lost knowledge that her previous ward had failed to recover.

The great giant lords from Hartsvale to the Ice Spire Mountainsare rallying to the call that Jarl Ryndolg has been rumoured to have unearthed the famed Hartkiller’s Horn, said to herald the great Jarl that will unite the houses of giantkind and be hailed as kind hereforward.

In Jarl Rising, the players are challenged to determine and assess the extend of reported raids in the region and whether there is any connection to this uptick in frost giant activity in the region, as well as any compounding threats that may arise.

The origin of runes has long been lost to the majority of sages and wizards, save those with giant blood. However, with the shattering of the Ordning, the magic of runes has once again emerged into the Realms. Adventurers must delve into a ruined complex beneath the Spine of the World, suspected by SEER to be the birthplace of that arcane tradition.

A missing Elven Starsinger priestess has piqued the interest of the Raven Queen in the midst of brutal raids upon the various elves of West Cormanthor – proposing to allow the deity to feed on her sorrow, she has been wisked to the Shadowfell amd now her fate is tied to the players’ ability to curry favour of the mysterious Raven Queen in exchange for the abducted Starsinger’s fate.

Originally produced as part of WotC’s Extra Life series, this adventure takes players on a jaunt through various locations in iconic dungeons in the Forgotten Realms, including the Tomb of Horrors and the lost Temple of Moloch to uncover legendary components of an infernal war machine.

Three important citizens of Phlan, who stand against the tyrannical dragon that rules, seek to escape and find refuge across the Moonsea. Can you extricate those that are vital to the factions before it’s too late?

Tangent to the Storm King’s Thunder officially published adventure, this AL module sets the party on a journey to recover and aid a lost dwarven expedition, led by the frost giant, Jarl, on behalf of the Lord’s Alliance. The expedition was seeking a lost artifact far from the comfort of Citadel Adbar under ambush by a band of Shatterblood ogres.

The blood lust of a sect of giant hunters has escalated as a troupe holds a frost giant hostage with murderous intent, threatening a tenuous peace with the giantkin. Players are sent on a diplomatic mission to free the captive, or otherwise determin the outcome of a sticky situation. Built with Storm King’s Thunder in mind.

A stand-out featuring of the planar-jumping Githyanki takes players into the Astral plane to challenge the lich-queen of their culture.

Loosely attached to Mordenkeinen’s tome of foes, this adventure introduces the Githyanki and their societal feud with the terrifying Illithid (mind-flayers) and can easily begin in any Forgotten Realms city (or homebrew for that matter).

Maze of Shadows is both a robust compendium for the region of Chult, tangent to the Tomb of Annihilation campaign source, and a dungeon-crawler for levels 11-16.

Another collab from the DMs Guild Adepts, the book holds a great number of NPC and regional map resources and lore items to apply to any adventure that involves or explores the jungle island setting around the lost city of Mezro.

East of Beregost, nestled in the outskirts of the Wood of Sharp Teeth, Durlag’s Tower has intrigued and yet stymied adventurers for decades. Stuffed full of mechanical traps and arcane wards, and rumored to be inhabited by fiends, very few have managed to extract any REAL treasure from the former home of Durlag Trollkiller. However, a powerful item in the ancient fight against the giants is said to be housed there, and the cloud giant Baron Rajiram has committed significant resources toward recovering it. After a pleasant tea in her garden, SEER calls upon you to beat him there and put a stop to his efforts!

My Two Copper

Free Dungeons and Dragons to help you play at homeNot really much on this – I think they’re great, and they’re FREE; however, I DO wish the window of availability was a bit more forgiving. Often when these are announced you only have a few days to go and grab them, which means late-comers may miss out on a lot of these.

I’m not sure yet, but I believe the VTT versions will time out when the window closes, so I’m not sure what that might mean for a game you’ve started when the module is no longer ‘free’ but I’ll update here what that happens. If you know what happens to a time-limited FREE module on Roll20, FG or DnDBeyond after it expires, hit me up on Twitter and let me know!

Have fun and enjoy these great free modules from WoTC and some of the brightest 3P publishers on DMsGuild, just make sure you don’t waste time getting them!
